If you’re looking to start a blog, the very first step you need to take is to secure a domain name.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is your website name. It is what people type in on their browsers to find you on the internet.
For example, my domain name is aldwinzalameda.com. If I want to access my website, I simply type that URL or link on my browser.
So, if you want people to be able to visit your website, then you need to have a domain name.
Why register with Namecheap?
Namecheap is a domain registrar. It is where I purchased my domain name aldwinzalameda.com.
You can get a .com domain right now for about $8-10 per year which is way cheaper compared to other providers that charge $15 or more.
Plus, you also get access to a free domain privacy protection service that hides your personal info in the public whois database.
So, if you’re looking to grab a cheap domain name with free domain privacy protection, then I highly recommend you check out Namecheap.
In this tutorial, I’m going to show you step by step how to register a domain name with Namecheap.
Let’s get started.
Search for your domain name
First, go to Namecheap.com.
Enter your preferred domain name on the search box and hit the search button to see if it’s available.
If the domain name you typed in is unavailable, you will see an X mark with the word “TAKEN” next to it.
Take for example my own domain name – aldwinzalameda.com.
It’s already registered to me, so no one else can register that name unless I stop paying for it.
Let’s try another one – typeinyourdomainname.com.
If it’s available, you will see a checkmark before the domain name including the cost to purchase it.
As you can see, the above domain is available and it retails at $10.98 per year. But due to Kingcom promo, it only costs $8.88 for a year.
Kingcom is Namecheap’s promo that allows you to register .com domains at a discounted price.
As much as possible, try to register a domain name with a .com extension.
It’s one of the most popular, trusted, and recognized domain extension on the internet.
And it’s easy to remember, right? Because when I think of a website, I always assume it ends with a .com.
So, once you’re satisfied with your domain name, click Add to cart.
View your cart
On your cart, you will see a breakdown of the cost to register the domain name.
Notice there’s an added ICANN fee of $0.18.
ICANN fee is a mandatory annual fee of $0.18 for each year of domain registration, renewal, or transfer.
To continue, click View Cart.
Here, you can select the term and option to auto-renew the domain name.
- Domain Registration – Select the term. It can be up to a maximum of five years.
- WhoisGuard – Enable this option. WhoisGuard is a free domain privacy protection service that hides your personal info in the public whois database which helps keep your data safe and helps to avoid spam.
I highly recommend enabling WhoisGuard. Without it, expect to get some random calls or emails from people trying to offer their services to you.
Once you’re ready, click Confirm Order.
If you have a Promo Code, enter it before confirming the order.
Create an account
After confirming the order, you will be prompted to create an account.
If you already have an account with Namecheap, simply login to your account to continue.
Fill out the required information. You will use this to access your account later on to manage your domain name.
Once you’re done, click Create Account and Continue.
Review and complete your order
Once you’ve created an account, review your order carefully. If you need to make some changes, you can always go back to edit the cart.
Next, enter your payment method.
Then, click Pay Now to complete your order.
That’s it! You’ve now registered your domain name with Namecheap. To view and manage your domain name, go to the account dashboard.
