Right after I installed WordPress, I started looking for a theme to customize the way this site looks.
I currently use the Genesis Framework from StudioPress and a free Child Theme from Brian Gardner – founder of StudioPress.
StudioPress is a Premium WordPress Themes provider. In order to use their themes, you will have to install the Genesis Framework and a Child Theme on top of it.
- Genesis Framework – This is the framework that acts as a design, security, and SEO foundation of your WordPress site.
- Child Theme – This is where you make site customizations which rests on top of the framework.
Genesis Framework + Child Theme
When I started dabbling in building an online business a few years back, I had purchased Genesis with the Pro Plus Package so I get to access all child themes they offer now and every child theme they create in the future.
After browsing through all available themes, I was thinking of using either the Authority Pro – inspired by Melyssa Griffin or the Smart Passive Income Pro – inspired by Pat Flynn (both successful bloggers I look up to online).
They’re both great themes but it kind of felt like too much for me to start with.
And I realized I had nothing to offer yet aside from a few blog posts that I will have to create so I wouldn’t be able to maximize its potential at this stage.
So I decided to look for a minimal yet functional theme while I’m still in the process of building this site.
Then I found this theme Twenty Seven Pro – a FREE minimalist theme designed for lifestyle and food bloggers created by Brian Gardner.
Though I don’t think I’d be blogging about food or lifestyle, I found the minimal design and typography quite appealing.
If you’re interested in using this theme, just visit his website and simply download it from there.
Although it’s a free theme, you will still need to purchase the Genesis Framework to be able to use it.
How to Install a WordPress Theme
To install a theme, follow these steps…
- Go to Themes
- Upload a Theme
- Activate a Theme
Step 1. Go to Themes
Login to your WordPress dashboard.
Hover your cursor to Appearance and select Themes.
Step 2. Upload a Theme
Under Themes, click Add New and then Upload Theme.
Make sure to upload a theme in .zip format. Then click Install Now to continue.
Step 3. Activate Theme
After uploading the theme, wait for it to be successfully installed.
Click on Activate to continue.
You might see an alert “Please Activate a Genesis Child Theme.”
That is expected. It shows up when you activate Genesis directly. To fix this, just follow steps 2 and 3 to upload a child theme.
StudioPress recommends to always use a child theme when using the Genesis Framework for WordPress.
- It allows you to customize your site. You will find it very difficult to customize the look of your site without using a child theme.
- It protects your customization. Every now and then, Genesis releases an update. If you make customizations directly on the framework, you’ll end up losing your hard work when it gets updated. But if you’re using a child theme, all your customizations are stored in a separate location. Meaning, you can simply update Genesis without affecting the look of your site.
When you’re done, click Visit Site to check out the new theme.
That’s it! I hope you learned from this tutorial. If you have some questions, please feel free to drop me a comment below.
