In this tutorial, I’m going to share with you how I created a menu on my site and start adding items to it.
Defining a Menu
Before you can add items to a menu, you need to define the menu and its location first. Depending on the theme, you might have just one or multiple menu areas that you can use.
Let’s get started…
On your WordPress dashboard, click on Customize > Menus to create a new menu.
Instead of clicking on Create New Menu, I would suggest clicking on View All Locations first to identify potential menu locations. This way, you can easily assign a name to the menu.
For the theme I use, I can display menus in two locations –Left Menu and Right Menu.
Under Left Menu, click on + Create New Menu to continue.
Creating a Menu
On the box below Menu Name, enter a name to identify that menu. Since it’s going to the left menu, I decided to give it the same name for easy reference.
When you’re done, click on Next to continue.
Adding Items to a Menu
After defining a menu, you can start adding links to your new menu.
Click on Add Items to start adding items. You can add a custom link, page, post, categories, or tags.
Since I didn’t have any post or page yet, I simply added the default Custom Link – Home. I’ll probably add two or more menu items here once I start creating pages.
Adding another Menu
Now, for the Right Menu, simply go back to the main menu options and repeat the same steps above.
After defining the Right Menu, click on Add Items to start adding items to it. Again, since I haven’t created any post or page yet, I just picked the Sample Page included with the theme.
When you’re done, hit Publish to save the changes you’ve made and then view your site.
There you have it! I hope you learned from this tutorial. If you find this post useful, please share this to others so they can learn from it too.
