Flying the Turbo Arrow

Getting started

  • Passenger door > OPEN to allow entry into the cockpit.
  • Baggage door > OPEN (use EFB).
  • Exterior > check baggage door has opened then return to cockpit.

Pre-flight inspections

  • Magneto selector > check OFF.
  • Landing gear lever > confirm DOWN.
  • Parking brake handle > confirm ON.
  • Avionics > check OFF.
  • Mixture lever > set to IDLE CUT-OFF.
  • Battery Master > switch ON.
  • Fuel quantity gauges > check/confirm FULL TANKS (36 gallons per tank).
  • Landing gear lights > confirm three green lights.
  • Navigation light > switch ON.
  • Anti-collision light > switch ON.
  • Landing light > switch ON.
  • Exterior lights > check all are illuminated then switch OFF.
  • Annunciator + Low Voltage lights > confirm lights are illuminated.
  • Battery master > switch OFF.
  • Flying controls > check if has full and free movement.
  • Flaps > check if extending and retracting fully.
  • Elevator and rudder trims > move to center/neutral position.
  • External > carry out visual inspection of the aircraft.
  • Wheel chocks and tie-downs > check if visible.
  • Towbar > confirm not connected/visible.
  • Battery > use EFB to recharge (if discharged)
  • Oil quantity > check and refill if less than 8 quarts.

Starting the engine

  • Chocks and tie-downs > REMOVE (use EFB)
  • Baggage door > CLOSE (use EFB)
  • Passenger door > CLOSE manually and LATCH to position (or use EFB)
  • Parking brake > check if SET.
  • Circuit breakers > check all are PUSHED IN.
  • Fuel selector > rotate to LEFT position.
  • Propellor lever > FULL FORWARD.
  • Throttle lever > advance to approx. 1/4 open.
  • Alternate air > set to CLOSE.
  • Avionics > confirm OFF.
  • Battery master > switch ON.
  • Navigation lights > turn ON (warning/about to start engine).
  • Fuel pump > switch OFF.
  • Mixture lever > move to FULL RICH (forward) position.
  • Primer > push and hold until fuel flow is displayed (approx. 3 seconds).
  • Area/surrounding > check clear of obstructions.
  • Magneto/start selector > rotate to START (fully clockwise) position.
  • Magneto/start selector > release to BOTH (after engine starts).
  • Fuel pump > set to LO.
  • Oil pressure and temperature > check if both rising.
  • Alternator > switch ON.
  • Anunciator panel > confirm ALT (alternator) warning light extinguishes.
  • Throttle > adjust to maintain 1,400 to 1,500 RPM
  • Vacuum gauge > check suction within given limits.
  • Avionics > switch ON.
  • Autopilot > leave switched OFF.
  • Fuel selector > rotate to the RIGHT and then the LEFT position (to check if engine operates correctly on both tanks before selecting the fullest tank).

Configuring the avionics

  • Heading bug > set runway heading.
  • NAV/GPS source > set to NAV.
  • KN 62A > set to RMT (remote) position.
  • DME selector switch > set to NAV 1.
  • ATC > request IFR and taxi clearance.

Taxi

  • Area > check if clear of obstacles.
  • Parking brake > RELEASE.
  • Throttle > apply power slowly to get the aircraft rolling and then start your taxi to the threshold of runway.
  • Steering > use rudder pedals and apply brakes for tight turns.
  • Gyroscopic instruments > check operation (horizontal attitude, heading, and turn and bank indicators).
  • Holding point > stop to carry out power (ground) check here.
  • Parking brake > SET.
  • Propeller lever > confirm in FULL FORWARD position.

Magneto check

  • Throttle lever > obtain 2,000 RPM.
  • Magneto selector > rotate to LEFT position (note the RPM drop).
  • Magneto selector > rotate back to BOTH position.
  • Repeat the process for the right magneto.
  • Vacuum, oil temperature, oil pressure, and ammeter readings > check if within limits.
  • Annunciator lights > use PRESS-TO-TEST button to confirm lights illuminate.
  • Mixture lever > set to FULL RICH (fully forward).
  • Fuel selector > set to the fullest tank.

Propeller check

  • Throttle lever > obtain 2,000 RPM.
  • Propeller lever > cycle twice high/low position (note the drop on tachometer).
  • Propeller lever > reset to FULL FORWARD position.

Alternate air check

  • Alternate air knob > pull and check manifold pressure does not drop then push in again.

Fuel system check

  • Fuel pump > switch OFF and confirm fuel pressure is still within green sector.

Rough running check

  • Throttle > reduce to idle and check for rough running.

Before take-off checks

  • Battery master and alternator switches > confirm set to ON.
  • Fuel selector > rotate to fullest tank.
  • Fuel pump > switch to LO (low).
  • Alternate air lever > set to CLOSE.
  • Mixture and propeller levers > FULL FORWARD position.
  • Flaps > lower to 10deg (first stage) position.
  • Magneto selector > confirm in BOTH position.
  • Landing and anti-collision lights > switch ON.
  • Pitch trim wheel > rotate in neutral/centre position.
  • Both doors > confirm LOCKED.
  • Flying controls > confirm full and free movement.
  • Pitot heat > switch ON.
  • Approach > look left and right and verify nothing is on approach, runway is clear.
  • ATC > request take-off clearance.

Take-off

  • Line up with the runway centre line and then come to a stop.
  • HSI Course > check/set to departure runway.
  • Throttle > Smoothly apply full power.
  • at 65 knots > start to raise the nose of the aircraft.
  • once airborne > tap the brakes and raise landing gear.
  • Climb speed > maintain 90 knots.
  • Flaps > retract at 300ft AGL.

Climb

  • Climb speed > maintain 90 knots.
  • at 1,000ft > switch OFF fuel pump and landing light.
  • HSI Course > set to destination runway.
  • HSI Heading > set to next waypoint.
  • Autopilot > engage switch A/P ON position.
  • Heading switch > move to HDG ON position.

Cruise

  • Altitude > use altitude hold mode (navigation/approach coupler knob).
  • Throttle > reduce to obtain 28 inHG on the manifold pressure gauge.
  • Propeller lever > reduce to obtain 2,300 RPM on the tachometer (typical cruise power setting).
  • Fuel tanks > change every half hour and do not exceed fuel imbalance of 10 US gallons (use the automatic fuel selector in the EFB for convenience).
  • Avionics > check readings.

Descent

  • Propeller lever > FULLY FORWARD (high RPM) position.
  • Throttle > reduce to obtain 20 inHG on the manifold pressure gauge (airspeed will start to decrease).
  • at 100 knots > start the descent (disengage altitude hold mode and pitch down at -500ft/min descent rate).
  • Throttle > adjust to maintain 100 knots (as the aircraft stabilises in its descent).

Approach and landing

at 1,000 feet

  • Vertical speed > reduce to enter level flight.
  • Autopilot > disengage (HDG OFF and A/P OFF).
  • Landing light > switch ON.
  • Fuel pump > switch to LO (low).
  • Propeller and mixture levers > confirm FULLY FORWARD.
  • Fuel selector > set to the fullest tank.

at base leg

  • Airspeed > reduce to 100 knots.
  • Flaps > at 10deg position.
  • Landing gear > extend (confirm three greens).
  • Airspeed > reduce further to 85 knots.
  • Flaps > 25deg position.

on final approach

  • Flaps > at 40deg position.
  • Throttle > reduce power to 75 knots.
  • when over the runway > start to flare, reduce throttle to idle, and touchdown smoothly.

after touchdown

  • when aircraft has slowed > apply brakes and exit the runway.
  • Flaps > raise the flaps.
  • Landing and anti-collision lights > switch OFF.
  • Fuel pump and pitot heat > switch OFF.

Shutdown

  • Begin your taxi to the nearest available parking spot.
  • Parking brake > engage.
  • Avionics > switch OFF.
  • Throttle lever > bring to IDLE.
  • Mixture lever > back to IDLE CUT-OFF.
  • Magneto selector > rotate to OFF position (once the engine comes to a stop).
  • Navigation lights > switch to OFF.
  • Alternator > switch to OFF.
  • Battery > switch to OFF.
  • Fuel selector > rotate to FUEL OFF position.
  • Passenger and baggage doors > open.
