Flying the Turbo Arrow (Quick)

Starting the engine

  • Chock and tie-downs > REMOVE (use EFB).
  • Parking brake > SET.
  • Fuel selector > LEFT.
  • Propeller > FULL FORWARD.
  • Throttle > 1/4 OPEN.
  • Alternate air > CLOSE.
  • Avionics > OFF.
  • Battery master > ON.
  • Navigation lights > ON.
  • Panel and dome lights > ON (if dark).
  • Fuel pump > OFF.
  • Mixture lever > FULL RICH.
  • Primer > PUSH (3 seconds).
  • Magneto/start selector > START.
  • Fuel pump > LO (check oil pressure and temperature).
  • Alternator > ON (check annunciator panel).
  • Throttle > 1,400 – 1,500 RPM (check vacuum).
  • Avionics > ON.
  • Fuel selector > RIGHT then LEFT (check).
  • ATC > request flight clearance.

Configuring the avionics

  • HSI Heading > runway heading.
  • VOR frequency > tune first (NAV1) and second (NAV2) waypoint.
  • NAV/GPS source > set to NAV.
  • KN 62A > set to RMT (remote).
  • DME selector > set to NAV1.
  • ATC > request taxi clearance.

Taxi

  • Parking brake > RELEASE.
  • Throttle > Apply power slowly.
  • Taxi to threshold of runway.
  • Gyroscopic instruments > CHECK.
  • at treshold > STOP.
  • Parking brake > SET.
  • Power (ground) check > carry out at threshold.

Magneto check

  • Throttle > 2,000 RPM.
  • Magneto selector switch > LEFT (note RPM drop) then BOTH.
  • Repeat the process for the right magneto.
  • Vacuum, oil temperature, oil pressure, and ammeter readings > CHECK.
  • PRESS-TO-TEST button > PRESS.
  • Mixture lever > FULL RICH.
  • Fuel selector > fullest tank.

Propeller check

  • Throttle lever > 2,000 RPM.
  • Propeller lever > cycle twice high/low (note RPM drop on tachometer).

Alternate air check

  • Alternate air knob > PULL (check that manifold pressure does not drop) and then PUSH back in again.

Fuel system check

  • Fuel pump > OFF (confirm fuel pressure still within green sector).

Rough running check

  • Throttle > IDLE (check for rough running).

Before take-off checks

  • Battery master and alternator switches > ON.
  • Fuel selector > fullest tank.
  • Fuel pump > LO (low).
  • Alternate air > CLOSE.
  • Mixture and propeller levers > FULL FORWARD.
  • Flaps > lower at 10deg (first stage).
  • Magneto selector > BOTH.
  • Landing and anti-collision lights > ON.
  • Pitch trim wheel > neutral/centre position.
  • Passenger and baggage doors > LOCKED.
  • Flying controls > full and free movement.
  • Pitot heat > ON.
  • ATC > request take-off clearance.

Take-off

  • Line up runway center line and stop.
  • Throttle > smoothly apply power 41 inHG and 2,575 RPM.
  • at 70 knots > raise the nose of the aircraft.
  • when airborne > tap brakes and raise landing gear.
  • Climb speed > maintain 90 knots (hold runway heading).
  • at 300ft AGL > retract flaps.

Climb

  • Fuel pump > OFF.
  • Autopilot > A/P ON.
  • Heading switch > HDG ON.
  • Coupler radio selector > NAV 1.
  • Navigation/approach coupler > NAV.

Cruise

  • Navigation/approach coupler know > SET (altitude hold).
  • Throttle > 28 in HG.
  • Propeller > 2,300 RPM (typical cruise power).
  • Fuel tanks > change every half hour (do not exceed imbalance of 10 US gallons).

Descent

  • Propeller lever > FULLY FORWARD (high RPM).
  • Throttle lever > 20 inHG (airspeed will start to decrease).
  • at 100 knots > disengage altitude hold mode and pitch down -500ft/min. descent rate.
  • Throttle > maintain 100 knots.

Approach and landing

  • Heading bug > SET.

at 1,000ft

  • Enter level flight.
  • Autopilot > disengage to HDG OFF and A/P OFF.
  • Landing light > ON.
  • Fuel pump > LO (low).
  • Propeller and mixture levers > FULLY FORWARD.
  • Fuel selector > fullest tank.

once established on the base leg

  • Airspeed > reduce to 100 knots.
  • Flaps > 10deg position.

when closing to airfield

  • Landing gear > extend (confirm three greens).
  • Airspeed > reduce to 85 knots.
  • Flaps > 25deg position.
  • Begin a descending turn to position yourself on final for runway.

once established on final

  • Flaps > extend to 40deg (fully down).
  • Power > 75 knots.

over the runway

  • Flare > raise noise just above horizon.
  • Throttle > reduce to idle and touchdown smoothly.

on runway

  • Brakes > apply brakes (once slowed to a fast walking pace).
  • Exit runway.

off the runway

  • Flaps > RAISE.
  • Landing and anti-collision lights > OFF.
  • Fuel pump > OFF.
  • Pitot heat > OFF.

Shutdown

  • Taxi to the nearest available parking spot.
  • Parking brake > engage.
  • Avionics > OFF.
  • Throttle > IDLE.
  • Mixture > IDLE CUT-OFF.
  • Magneto selector > OFF.
  • Navigation lights > OFF.
  • Alternator > OFF.
  • Battery > OFF.
  • Fuel selector > FUEL OFF.
  • Passenger and baggage doors > OPEN.
