Engine Start

  • Parking Brake > Set
  • Battery > On
  • Prop Control > Full Forward
  • Carb Air Filter > Filter in Operation
  • Fuel > On
  • Mixture > Idle/Cutoff
  • External Tank > Off
  • Throttle > Open 1/2″
  • Booster or Wobble Pump > Until Low Pressure Light Off
  • Primer > As Required
  • Starter and Booster Coil Covers > Open
  • Mixture > Auto (Full Forward)
  • Magnetos > Both On
  • Starter and Booster > Engage Both

Taxi

  • Flaps > Raised
  • Prop Control > Full Forward
  • Carb Air Filter > Filter in Operation
  • Canopy > Open
  • Door > Unlocked
  • Parking Brake > Release
  • Throttle > Bursts of up to 1500rpm
  • Maneuvering > S-turns
  • Braking > Short taps

Run-Up Check

As per checklist:

  • Elevator Trim > Neutral or 1/5 division up
  • Rudder Trim > Neutral or right bias
  • Prop Control > Full Forward
  • Fuel Booster Pump > On
  • Flaps > Raised
  • Supercharger > Auto
  • Carb Air Filter > Filter in Operation

Basic run-up checks:

  • RPM > Set 2500rpm
  • Prop Control > Pull back and check RPM drop; push forward and verify RPM recovers
  • Magneto R > Switch off and check RPM drop; turn back on and verify RPM recovers
  • Magneto L > Switch off and check RPM drop; turn back on and verify RPM recovers

Take-Off

  • Throttle > Advance to +6 (+12 max)
  • Lift Off > 100-120mph
  • Landing Gear > Raise
  • Elevator and Rudder Trims > Retrim as needed
  • Door > Locked
  • Canopy > Closed
  • Carb Air Filter > Normal Intake
  • Fuel Booster Pump > Off

Approach + Landing

  • Canopy > Open at < 160mph
  • Door > Unlocked
  • Prop Control > Full Forward
  • Landing Gear > Down at <160mph
  • Carb Air Filter > Filter in Operation
  • Fuel Booster Pump > On
  • Flaps > Down at <140mph
  • Pneumatic Pressure > Check Brakes
  • Approach > 120mph
  • Touchdown > 95mph

After Landing

  • Flaps > Raise before taxiing
  • Parking Brake > Set
  • Idle for a few seconds > 800-900rpm
  • Mixture > Idle cut off
  • Magnetos > Both Off
  • Battery > Off
  • Fuel > Off

Miscellaneous

Above 10,000ft

  • Oxygen Valve and Regulator > Open

Above 12,000ft

  • Fuel Tank Pressure > On

Release Drop Tank

  • Fuel Selector > Main Tank (Full Forward)
  • Release Tank > Pull Lever

Common Power Settings

  • Take-Off > Max RPM, boost gradually
  • Max Climb > 2,850 (+12) 1hr
  • Combat > 3,000 (+18) 5min
  • Normal Rated (Max Cont) > 2,650 (+7) no limit
  • Cruise > 2,200 (+4) to 1,850 (+0.5)
  • Brake to 160mph > 2,650 (-2 @level, -3 @500fpm)
  • Approach @95mph > 1,800 to 2,200 (-5 or so)
