  • DC Selector > Rotate/Check Batt 1 (min 24v); then Batt 2 (min 24v).

  • No Smoking Signs > AUTO
  • Cabin Emergency Lighting > ARM
  • Landing Gear > DOWN (check/confirm three greens)
  • Brake Selector > YEL (and pulled for parking brakes)
  • Yaw Damp Master 1 and 2 > ON
  • AP Master > ON
  • Avionics Master 1 and 2 > ON
  • Anti-skid > ON
  • Lift Spoilers YEL and GRN > ON
  • Bus-Tie AC and DC > AUTO
  • Standby Inverter > ARM
  • Standby Generator > ARM
  • Engine Generators GEN 1 and GEN 4 > OFF/RESET
  • APU Generator > ON
  • Fuel Pump L INNER > ON
  • APU > START (monitor APU RPM and TGT as it spools up
  • APU Power Available > when APU RPM reaches 97% + 4sec

  • Pack > TURN ON ONE PACK (PACK 1 – odd days; PACK 2 – even days)
  • MWS CTRL > PUSH TO TEST (check/confirm all annunciators illuminated/audible)
  • MWS CTRL > PULL BACK TO MIDDLE POSITION (red light extinguished)
  • Ground Tests > As required
  • DC Pump > ON (check for a rise in YEL brake pressure); turn OFF once confirmed
  • AC Pump > ON (check for a rise in YEL system hydraulic pressure)
  • PTU > ON (check for a rise in GREEN system hydraulic pressure)
  • PTU and AC Pump > OFF (when all annunciator lights have been extinguished)
  • Engine Anti-Ice > ON (all 4x switches)
  • Flight Deck Emergency Lighting > ARM
  • Yaw Damper (YD 1 and YD 2) > PUSH TO ENGAGE
  • Oxygen Main Valve > OPEN (confirm supply using test feature on both regulators)

Passenger boarding and baggage loading

  • Forward Passenger Door > OPEN (use EFB tablet)
  • Cargo Doors (both) > OPEN (use EFB tablet)
  • Airstairs > EXTEND (use EFB tablet)
  • Cabin and Ground crew > prep passenger boarding and loading of baggage

Before Start checklist

  • Parking brake > confirm engaged (if less than 2,500 psi, turn ON DC Pump)
  • Thrust levers > confirm FUEL OFF position
  • Hydraulics > confirm all OFF
  • CTR Tank Transfer > AUTO
  • Pressurization Mode > AUTO
  • Discharge Valves > NORMAL
  • Flight Altitude > SET
  • Ice Detect > ON
  • Fuel > confirm sufficient for flight (wings/centre tank)
  • Flight Data Recorder > set date
  • Transponder > press ATC/FID to enter flight ID; then press ENTER to confirm
  • Transponder > press ATC/FID again to return ATC mode
  • TMS > configure

Thrust Modulation System (TMS)

  • PWR > ON; then TEST
  • TREF > set outside air temperature
  • TO > arm Take-off mode
  • N% > check N1 setting for current pressure altitude, selected ambient temperature, and engine anti-ice setting
  • TGT > set to max climb temperature 840C
  • N1 and TGT bugs > set centre panel (click flipchart to auto set)
  • Take-off speeds > refer to flipchart for Flaps setting and VR, V2, and VFTO speeds
  • ASI > set reference speeds using coloured bugs (click flipchart to auto set)
  • TMS > turn OFF (to avoid interference with engine start)

Navigation Instruments for Departure

  • Flight director bars > ON
  • VHF NAV 1 > ON
  • DME knob > ON
  • Tune VOR (refer to flight plan) into the active slot
  • NAV 1 course selector > Set course inbound to VOR (refer to flight plan)
  • HDG knob > Set runway heading; then arm AP HDG mode
  • Altitude > Set cruise altitude; then press ALT ARM
  • ADF > tune ADF 2 frequency; then rotate ADF 2 mode knob to position (as required)
  • RMI/DBI > select left button to VOR; right button to ADF
  • HSI source > confirm set to NAV
  • VHF COMM 1 and 2 radios > switch both ON

Starting the engines

  • Airstairs > retract (confirm passenger boarding complete)
  • AC Pump > ON (to pressurise YELLOW hydraulic system)
  • Airstairs > retract (use EFB tablet)
  • AC Pump > OFF
  • Passenger/Cargo Doors > CLOSE
  • Chocks > REMOVE
  • FASTEN BELTS > ON
  • Beacon LIghts > ON
  • APU Air > OFF
  • PACKS > OFF
  • Parking brake > RELEASE
  • Pushback > START
  • Parking brake > Set (once pushback is complete)
  • Fuel pumps > ON all 4x
  • Start Power > confirm NORM
  • Start Master > ON
  • Start Select > start with engine 4 (then 3, 2, 1)
  • Engine Start > START (up) position for 1s and then release (ENG IGN A & B ON and STARTER OPERATING lights will illuminate)
  • N1, TGT, and N2 > monitor
  • Thrust Lever (FUEL OFF) > once N2 reaches approx. 10% switch to FUEL ON
  • N1/TGT/N2 > monitor fuel flow (increasing)
  • Repeat the process for engines 3, 2, and 1 (once prev engine has stabilised at idle thrust)
  • Start Selector > OFF (with all 4x engines started)
  • Start Master > OFF
  • Engine Anti-Ice > keep ON (if expecting any icing conditions; otherwise turn OFF)
  • GEN 1 and GEN 4 > ON (to start supplying electrical power from generators)
  • APU Air > ON (to supply air conditioning to the cabin during taxi and takeoff)
  • PACK 1 and PACK 2 > ON
  • Brake Fans > set to AUTO
  • ENG 2 and ENG 3 hydraulic pumps > switch ON (monitor psi increasing)
  • AC PUMP and PTU > turn ON (once 3,000psi has been confirmed in each system)
  • Heaters (Ice Protection) > switch ON all heaters
  • TMS > switch ON again with TO mode armed for takeoff
  • Transponder > set to TA

Taxi

  • Start taxi
  • Flaps > select flaps 18 and confirm extension using flap position indicator
  • Taxi lights > ON
  • Flaps > confirm extended to 18 degrees
  • Rudder and Aileron Trims > confirm centered
  • Elevator Trim > confirm within green band range (click CG% SMC box on EFB)
  • CONFIG CHECK > press and hold (config horn not audible – configured correctly for takeoff)
  • CONT IGN A and B > switch ON (if there’s standing water present on runway or heavy precipitation)
  • Cabin Call button > press and confirm cabin secure slider
  • Landing and Strobe Lights > ON
  • TMS > confirm ON; TO mode engaged; and N1 REF is shown
  • Flight controls > check unlocked; elevator/ailerons/rudder have full/unrestricted movement
  • MWS captions > all extinguished except for appropriate green captions

Take-off

  • Line up with the runway centre line and then come to a stop
  • Thrust levers > hold brakes; levers forward to around 55% N1 (check engines are stable)
  • Thrust levers > smoothly advance to approx. N1
  • Brakes > release (once N1 thrust has been achieved)
  • at VR > rotate up to 10deg
  • at V2 + 10 > should be cleared of the ground
  • Landing gear > Gear Up (positive rate of climb)
  • at VFTO speed and 1,500ft AGL > retract flaps
  • Climb speed > maintain 190kts

Climb

  • at 2,000ft AGL > engage autopilot and VS mode
  • Thrust > reduce to maintain climb speed of approx. 220 KIAS
  • Note: baseline climb thrust > 88% N1, increasing 1% for every 5,000ft of altitude
  • TMS > press SYNC and MSTR to select engine 1 as the master engine
  • Heading > set initial heading to VOR; then engage V/L (VOR LOC) mode to intercept inbound course
  • Vertical speed > use autopilot SYNC feature to adjust (toggle afterburner key) to manually pitch the aircraft to command a new vertical speed
  • Vertical speed (alternative) > use IAS mode for pitch control in the climb

After takeoff and climb checks

  • Gear/Flaps > UP/RETRACTED
  • Engine Air > ON all 4x
  • APU Air > OFF
  • Cabin Pressure > check/confirm aircraft pressurising
  • AC Pump and PTU > switch OFF
  • APU Master > STOP (to shutdown)
  • Cabin call > press to allow cabin crew to begin their duties
  • at 10,000ft > switch OFF landing lights and fasten seatbelts signs
  • at 10,000ft > increase climb speed to 250 KIAS
  • VHF NAV 1 radio > pre select next VOR (move ACT/PRE switch to PRE)
  • at 5NM of VOR > sync the heading bug to current heading and engage HDG mode
  • next VOR > select the inbound course using NAV 1 selector
  • VHF NAV 1 radio > flip next VOR to active slot and then pre select V/L (VOR LOC) mode to intercept and hold course to next VOR
  • TMS/MCT mode > use to set max continous thrust and maintain MCT.
  • TMS/SYNC mode (recommended) > climb with the lower N1 values to preserve engine life
  • Climb > use IAS mode at 250 knots; if above 24,000ft switch to Mach mode and hold Mach 0.6 until reaching cruising altitude

Cruise

  • Cruise speed (desired) > 280 KIAS or Mach 0.68 (146 not fitted with autothrottle)
  • Repeat VOR change process once overflying the prev VOR
  • Cabin altitude > confirm it has stabilised at the selected value, with a differential pressure within limits

Cockpit (other stuff)

  • NAV 1 audio knob > increase volume to hear morse code ident for currently selected VOR
  • Flight deck and cabin (airconditioning) > AUTO; set as required
  • Electric panel > rotate DC and AC meter knobs to see output from batteries, TRs, and engine generators
  • Engine generators > check load
  • FMS CDUs > refer to FMS manual for info

Descent

  • Tune ILS frequency for the approach into the pre select slot
  • Tune NDB that will be used for the approach
  • Tune ADF 2 radio and confirm RMI/DBI right selector is still set to ADF
  • Decision Height > set at 200ft on RAD ALT panel
  • at 10 NM > start descent outbound last VOR
  • Speed > reduce to 250 KIAS
  • Altitude > set 2,000ft; then ALT ARM
  • Pitch > engage VS mode and use autopilot SYNC mode to pitch down -2,000ft/min
  • Airbrake > maintain 250 KIAS; use as required
  • TMS > engage DESC mode (to maintain minimum N2 thrust setting if flight idle)

Descent checklist

  • PTU > ON
  • Cabin altitude > reduce to airport level approx.
  • VREF speed > check flipchart for approach; use 33 deg flaps

Approach and Landing

  • VHF 1 NAV > set ILS frequency/course
  • at 10,000ft > Landing LIghts > turn ON
  • Airspeed > reduce to 220 KIAS

Approach checks

  • Fasten seatbelts sign > ON
  • at 5,000ft > start APU Master (confirm RPM and TGT rise)
  • at 2,000ft > increase/adjust thrust to maintain 220 KIAS
  • Airspeed > continue to reduce to 200 KIAS
  • V/L and GSL mode > ARM (once stabilised on direct course to intercept VOR/ILS/NDB)
  • Cabin Call > PRESS to secure cabin for landing
  • Flaps > set to 18 (check airspeed below 205 KIAS)
  • Landing Gear > LOWER (confirm three greens)
  • Airspeed > reduce further towards VREF + 10
  • Flaps > extend to 33 degrees
  • V-speeds flipchart > CLICK to auto set landing speed bugs

Landing checks

  • AC Pump > set to AUTO
  • APU Air > ON
  • Engine Air > OFF
  • Brakes > YEL (confirm)
  • Flaps > 33 degrees (confirm)
  • TMS > will auto disconnect when passing 200ft; for manual disconnect – press TMS disconnect (assigned as AUTO THROTTLE TO GA)
  • at 500ft > disconnect autopilot; reduce speed to VREF
  • at runway threshold > extend airbrakes; begin to flare (raise nose just above horizon)
  • Thrust levers > reduce to flight idle; touchdown smoothly
  • at touchdown > move thrust levers to ground idle; lower nose-wheel onto the runway; extend the lift spoilers (move airbrake handle fully aft); apply gentle braking
  • Turn onto the first available taxiway once the aircraft has slowed

After landing checks

  • Flaps, Airbrakes, and Lift Spoilers > RETRACT
  • Taxi Lights > ON
  • Strobe Lights > OFF
  • TMS > OFF
  • Transponder > STBY
  • CONT IGN A and B > OFF (check)

Shutdown

  • Taxi to nearest available stand.
  • Taxi Lights > OFF (as you turn onto the stand)
  • Parking brake > ENGAGE (once you have come to a stop on the stand)
  • Cabin pressure > confirm aircraft is depressurized (cabin altitude should match the airfield elevation)
  • MWS GRND OP > pull out GRND OP position with red light illuminated
  • Hydraulic pumps > all OFF
  • GEN 1 and GEN 4 > OFF/RESET
  • Thrust Lever > FUEL OFF position
  • Fasten Seatbelts > OFF
  • Fuel Pumps > all OFF (except L INNER pump for APU)
  • Heaters > all OFF
  • Ice detection > OFF
  • Beacon light > OFF
  • Passenger and cargo doors > OPEN (use EFB)
  • Airstairs > EXTEND (use EFB)
  • Chocks > ENABLE (use EFB)
  • Ready for deboarding

Leaving the aircraft

  • Yaw Damper Master 1 and 2 > OFF
  • AP Master Switch > OFF
  • Avionics Master A and B > OFF
  • Brake Fans > OFF (once the brakes are sufficiently cool)
  • Anti-Skid > OFF
  • YEL and GRN lift spoilers > OFF
  • Cabin Emergency Lights > OFF (confirm EMERG LTS NOT ARMED caption is illuminated)
  • PACK 1 and PACK 2 > OFF
  • Flight Deck and Cabin Fans > OFF
  • APU Air > OFF (confirm APU VLV NOT SHUT annunciator extinguishes within 5 seconds)
  • APU > Shut down (press and hold APU OVSPD test button; release once a decrease in RPM and TGT is observed)
  • Fuel Pumps > OFF 4x
  • Galley > switch to SHED
  • Exterior, Interior, and Emergency Lighting > turn all OFF
  • BATT 1 and BATT 2 > OFF
